Rights Respecting
We are currently a bronze accredited school.
Rights Respecting schools work together with the UK committee for UNICEF to place children's rights at the centre of school life. Our Team of KS2 "Rights Ambassadors" work together with Teachers and leaders to deliver learning to the children about their rights, based on the International Convention of the Rights of the Child (ICRC).
At St Joseph's we teach about rights, through rights and for rights.
Teaching about rights
We have our school mascot - WILOW (Wilow is love all over the world)
Wilow helps children to learn about what their rights are and how they are upheld.
Children understand that Rights are for ALL (wherever in the world they live), they are available from BIRTH, they CANNOT be taken away, they DON'T have to be earnt and that all of their rights are EQUAL.
Teaching through rights
Respecting children's rights is embedded into our school ethos. We work hard to create a safe place for children to learn. ensure that children and their views are respected and that their talents are nurtured. Our Right's Ambassadors are currently working with leaders to ensure that children's rights are written into a number of our school policy documents.
Teaching for rights
We want our children to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens. We recognise that, sadly, some children are not always able to enjoy their rights and at St Joseph's we have been involved in a number of different fundraising activities to help support UNICEF, as well as other local community charities.
We are currently working towards our silver accreditation. If you would like to know more about the Rights Respecting for Schools Award, please click here.
